Iván Sarmiento, PhD
Colombian researcher with extensive experience working with indigenous communities. His doctoral research examined the impact of traditional midwives and intercultural brokers on maternal health outcomes in indigenous communities of Guerrero in southern Mexico. His research uses participatory modelling to bridge knowledge systems and foster dialogue between patients, practitioners, decision makers and communities. Focusing on self-care, his work aims to reduce the burden on health systems and empower communities. In Colombia and Mexico, he studies maternal self-care practices. In Botswana and Canada, he collaborates with PRAM members to engage youth to address critical issues like healthcare access, violence prevention, and suicide reduction. He maintains active partnerships with Indigenous communities in Colombia, Canada, and México.
